Nitsch's Orgien Mysterien Theater performances (or Aktionen, as he calls them) can be considered both ritualistic and existential. The scene is often involved with slaughters, religious sacrifices, crucifixion, as well as blood and flesh. The performances are also accompanied with music, dancing, and active participants. In his first Orgie Mysterien Theater performance, Nitsch and his friends used animal carcasses, entrails, and blood similarly to a ritual. There will also be forty photographs related to the performance, which will constitute as the cornerstone of Nitsch‘s ‘actions’, founder of Viennese Actionism, as a symbol of secular and cathartic ritualism in which origins lie deeply and remotely in collective rituals, which are dionysiac. These performances are the main protagonists of the numerous videos, also a part of the exhibition, which narrates the most important actions, achieved during the decades by Nitsch himself in his castle in Prinzendrof, near Vienna.

Hermann Nitsch performed the Das Orgien Mysterien Theater at the start of his career in 1957: it was a six-day long festival of ritualistic and spiritual creativity, accompanying its own theory and philosophy that focused mainly on reaching a state of absolute being. The artist would make groundbreaking audience-engaging performances and action paintings, involving and stressing all of the viewer’s senses.

Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch is not a man you want to take home to mum and dad. ‘Hi, guys. This is my new boyfriend Hermann – he’s a revolutionary European performance artist who crucifies people and drenches them in animal blood as part of an ongoing engagement with religion, ritual, philosophy and mysticism! The sex is fab!’ Nitsch came to prominence in the ’70s as part of a movement of radical Austrian artists – the actionists – who used their own bodies to create shockingly confrontational art in the wake of WWII.

Das Orgien Mysterien Theater book. Nitsch's work, which can be considered both ritualistic and existential, first drew attention in the early 1960s when he exhibited a skinned and mutilated lamb. The lamb was crucified against a white fabric-covered wall, with the entrails removed and displayed below a white table, splashed with blood and hot water. This was accompanied by Nitsch's "Geräuschmusik". Nitsch's subsequent work has incorporated many similar elements, often combining slaughtered animals, red fruits, music, dancing, and active participants. Nitsch juxtaposed slaughtered animal intestines with.
