A Real Dead One is a live album by the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, recorded in 1992/93 at concerts across Europe, and released on 25 October 1993. This album features songs from the very beginning of the band's career (1975) through the Powerslave era (1984) (hence the title, referring to the songs being old), while counterpart A Real Live One only contains songs from the post-Powerslave albums.

When the time came to conclude the Bruce Dickinson era with their second official live album, heavy metal legend Iron Maiden was faced with the common dilemma of how to adequately balance both old and new material into one package. So instead of releasing a continuous double-disc set combining the two, the band chose the novel approach of issuing two separate albums: A Real Live One, containing songs released after 1985's milestone Live After Death set; and A Real Dead One, containing updated versions of their early classics.

I own this album as part of the reissue with 'A Real Live One', obviously titled 'A Real Live Dead One'. These 2 albums were recorded and released in the early 90's (92/93 to be precise). This is the time period after Adrian Smith had left and right before Bruce Dickinson departed too. The band hadn't released a live album since 85's monumental classic 'Live After Death'. I think every Maiden live album gives us the song "Iron Maiden," and a lot have both "Running Free" and "Sanctuary. The beauty of this album is it also gives us "Prowler," "Transylvania" and "Remember Tomorrow," songs the band simply don't play anymore. Bruce sounds great on these tracks, even joking that he's never sung "Transylvania" before and isn't likely to (it's instrumental!)

A Real Dead One served as Dickinson’s Iron Maiden swan song, for the time being. And the band faced the daunting task of replacing him. The album is also notable for being the last time an illustration by artist Derek Riggs was used as an album cover. Well, he did play a minor role in the creation of the artwork for 2000’s comeback album Brave New World, but the 1993 live records was the last time proper Derek Riggs paintings were employed for album front covers.
