Wounded Rhymes is the second studio album by Swedish singer and songwriter Lykke Li. It was released on 25 February 2011 by LL Recordings and Atlantic Records. Written in Los Angeles and recorded in Stockholm, the album was produced by Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John, who also handled production for Li's debut album, Youth Novels (2008). Upon its release, Wounded Rhymes received acclaim from music critics, who viewed it as an improvement on its predecessor

Any honey flowing through Lykke Li's coy pop fully hardened on this dark and doomy follow-up to her 2008 debut album. The Swedish singer/songwriter traps the loss of youth and love in a warped wall of sound that echoes vintage girl-group pop on big, gushing torch songs like "Unrequited Love" and "Sadness Is a Blessing. But she comes into her own when harnessing her womanly power, with big, booming percussion on the tribal-esque thriller "Get Some. Wounded Rhymes Lykke Li.

Indeed, despite its vulnerable title, Wounded Rhymes practically oozes confidence, barreling out of the gate with the swaggering, rabble-rousing "Youth Knows No Pain," all in-the-red handclaps, hip-shaking drums and tambourines, and downright nasty, psych-damaged organ, as Li sneeringly exhorts us to "C'mon honey, blow yourself to pieces.

The combination of Wounded Rhymes’s noisy factory ambience and Li’s frayed persona is subtle yet striking, building slowly and purposefully without ever reaching heavy-handed bombast. Indeed, the album’s ache is of the icy variety; Li is comfortably detached at the center of the chill, conveying her pain and heartache with a blasé, machine-like efficiency. Silent My Song, with its bellowing elephant brass and war drums, casts her as a modern, female Sisyphus, dutifully rolling her boulder up that hill, her voice beautifully devoid of emotion.

The album serves as a bit of a soundtrack for anyone who’s managed to retain a romantic outlook past the age where such a thing is likely realistic, and the bitter struggle of rediscovery that follows.

Now 24, Lykke Li has done some serious growing up over the last few years, and we'll hear the results when her sophomore album, Wounded Rhymes, is released on March 1 via her own LL Recordings. LL: It's just a snapshot, but the album is darker, moodier, and the lyrics are heavier. There's less atmosphere, more directness.
