It features hit singles "You Can Leave Your Hat On" and "Don't You Love Me Anymore", the first made popular after its use in the famous striptease scene in the film 9 1/2 Weeks. Released as a single, Cocker's version of the song peaked at No. 35 on Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. The album also features rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues", a Motown legend's classic lament to urban decay.
Hard Knocks' was produced by Matt Serletic (Matchbox Twenty, Rob Thomas, Collective Soul, Carlos Santana) and includes nine brand new songs plus Cocker's version of the Dixie Chicks song "I Hope", produced by Nashville legend Tony Brown. After more than 40 years in the music business, Joe Cocker is still one of the most successful and popular artists worldwide.

Despite Cocker's trademark soulful rasp, this isn't an especially warm album. It's bright and bold, as hard and shiny as stainless steel, but there isn't a meanness to it: it's professional to its core, each note polished til it gleams, not one song outside of Cocker's wheelhouse. He pours his passion in, which may not be enough to liven up this buttoned-down upper-crust soul, but it is enough to keep things pleasant.

Hard Knocks Joe Cocker. Though he was often best known for his interpretation of songs by others, Cocker wrote nearly this entire album. The main exception is his rendition of The Dixie Chicks' "I Hope"; it was produced by Nashville stalwart Tony Brown, who also produced the Chicks' version. With a true R&B Hammond organ and a gospel choir backing him, Cocker sings from the pocket, laidback in the groove but still firmly in control.
