Dobie Gray (born Lawrence Darrow Brown; July 26, 1940 – December 6, 2011) was an American singer and songwriter, whose musical career spanned soul, country, pop, and musical theater  . However, his first album, Look!, failed to sell. Greater success came in early 1965 when his original recording of "The 'In' Crowd" (recorded later that year as an instrumental by Ramsey Lewis, and also covered in 1965 by Petula Clark) reached Written by Billy Page and arranged by his brother, Gene and produced by Fred Darian, Gray's record reached on the US R&B chart, and in the UK.

Drift Away/Loving Arms. Raven’s 2011 two-fer combines Dobie Gray’s 1972 album Drift Away and its 1973 sequel Loving Arms, adding three bonus tracks - Hey Dixie, So High (Rock Me Baby and Roll Me Away), The Music’s Real (Mentor’s Song) - from 1974’s Hey Dixie. As the years pass, it’s possible to hear Dobie Gray move steadily further into country, adding more down-home elements to his soul. Country is indeed present on Drift Away, whose slow-grooving provided Gray a signature tune that nevertheless did not reveal everything about his personality.
