Tokyo Police Club follows in the avant-funk tradition pioneered by Gang of Four and the Contortions, with the visceral kick of the Strokes thrown in. David Monks’ pumping bass and pinched vocals set the tone for these tracks, and the grooves here are compelling, whether the band is marching with drunken dignity ( Listen to the Math ), staggering across barbed-wire guitar lines ( In a Cave ) or rushing pell-mell towards imaginary exits ( Sixties Remake ). After a promising debut EP, this Canadian quartet gets down to some serious, weird business on 2008’s Elephant Shell, a jagged sonic junkshop filled with tongue-twisting lyrics and leg-entangling rhythms. Tokyo Police Club follows in the avant-funk tradition pioneered by Gang of Four and the Contortions, with the visceral kick of the Strokes thrown in.

Tokyo Police Club is an indie rock band from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. It consists of vocalist and bassist David Monks (born January 21, 1987), keyboardist Graham Wright (born February 16, 1987), guitarist Josh Hook (born May 11, 1987), and drummer Greg Alsop (born March 20, 1985). The band has been nominated for multiple Juno awards, most recently in 2019 for Alternative Album of the Year.

If the Lesson in Crime EP introduced Tokyo Police Club as Canadian disciples of the Strokes, then Elephant Shell finds them shedding their vintage leather jackets in favor of several different getups. Tracks like "Tessellate" and "Listen to the Math" dress themselves up with the same sort of witty, professorial wordplay of a Decemberists album, and frontman David Monks casually tosses off a word like "australopithecine" with the ease of an anthropologist.

Tokyo Police Club's full-length debut, Elephant Shell, is an album that benefits greatly from an obviously streamlined compositional philosophy. Musically, this translates into a shimmering, busy collection of 2008's finest, most authentic minimalist-pop songs. The album itself, for all its bold-faced simplicity, features some striking architecture and intelligent, slight diversity while maintaining common musical and lyrical themes throughout. It's an impressive anthem for all things linear, and ends so quickly that one is naturally compelled to hear it again.
