The original album of the Placido Domingo musical Goya by Maury Yeston Popular opera singer Plácido Domingo was interested in starring in a stage musical.
The Latin Album Collection" showcases eight delightful discs of Domingo's recordings of popular Spanish songs recorded between 1984 and 2002. Several are devoted to the works of just one pivotal composer: "Siempre en mi corazón" focuses on the hits of Cuban musician Ernesto Lecuona; "Soñadores de España" is comprised of songs by the Spaniard Manuel Alejandro; and "Bajo el Cielo Español" consists of works by Mexican composer Augustín Lara best known for his composition "Granada. I can never get enough of listening to Placido Domingo sing. After years of knowing only about his operatic arias I came across this collection, with its wonderful romantic Spanish (and some Portuguese) songs.
With well over 100 recordings, Placído Domingo’s extensive discography spans a legendary career, including feature films, full-length operas, as well as solo and duet recordings, many of which have garnered several gold and platinum distinctions. Plácido Domingo, one of the greatest opera singers of all time, and one of the few classical musicians who can genuinely be considered a household name, is 70 in January 2011. In 2010 he proved he is still going strong through incredible performances of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra at Covent Garden, his first performance as a baritone. He also appeared in the extremely popular live televised performances of Rigoletto. Certainly this is a sumptuous collection of the great tenor/baritone duets that inspired so many fine 78 records. But because the aim is so clearly to match the best of the 78 era, these are performances that demand to be judged by comparable standards.
