Mark Leckey’s first major video work, Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999), was informed by the artist’s working class upbringing. Foregrounding Leckey’s use of collage, music, and film, the work featured cut-up footage of the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s UK dance-music scenes.

Mark Leckey addresses the sense of abundance in contemporary culture. In the film Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999), Leckey spliced altered video footage from dance clubs with an amalgamation of sounds to examine countercultural nightlife, revealing the poignant interpersonal energy among and socio-economic aspirations of its revelers

One of the best works by the Turner Prize winner. Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore made Leckey’s reputation upon its exhibition in 1999. The audio from the piece was subsequently released on vinyl in 2012 and now in 2016 will receive a needed re-press. The piece is a ghostly assemblage of video footage and sonic materials documenting British musical countercultures. Leckey went on to win the Turner Prize in 2008.
