Tom Robinson wrote songs about THIS actually happening –'Winter of '79', 'Up Against the Wall' – and one of his stated aims was to wake people up and make them realize that the reality was not as far off as they might have thought. Today, we need more voices like the Tom Robinson band. In the mix of high emotion, of frustration and disillusionment, catalysed by the first wave of punk, it was only a matter of waiting for a performer like Tom Robinson to come along – one articulate enough to put the ‘new wave’ into coherent political perspective. Though Robinson rose swiftly to prominence largely on the strength of the hit single '2-4-6-8 Motorway', a straightforward celebration of life on the road set to an irresistibly exuberant melody, it was the spirit of insurrection implicit in his other songs that really made him so compelling.
