Bucke developed a theory involving three stages in the development of consciousness: the simple consciousness of animals; the self-consciousness of the mass of humanity (encompassing reason, imagination, et. ; and cosmic consciousness - an emerging faculty and the next stage of human development. Among the effects of this progression, he believed he detected a lengthy historical trend in which religious conceptions and theologies had become less and less fearful. Written at the end of the 19th century before the subject was even vaguely in vogue and following a momentary period of higher consciousness he experienced himself, Bucke, a physician, undertook an extensive study of such persons as Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, etc. from almost a physiological or clinical perspective.

Cosmic Consciousness: A Study in the Evolution of the Human Mind is a 1901 book by the psychiatrist Richard Maurice Bucke, in which the author explores the concept of cosmic consciousness, which he defines as "a higher form of consciousness than that possessed by the ordinary man". In Cosmic Consciousness, Bucke stated that he discerned three forms, or degrees, of consciousness: Simple consciousness, possessed by both animals and mankind.

Fourth state of consciousness: After those three parts of the OM Mantra, there is a Silence, the Fourth, which relates to consciousness or awareness itself. Three transition states: Between these four states of Consciousness there are three transition states. The OM Mantra is recommended in the Yoga Sutras and the Mandukya Upanishad, as well as in many other teachings. Four major levels: When used in this way, the OM Mantra (AUM) has four major levels of meaning and experience to the Yogi.

But the repetition of a mantra is anything but robotic. With regular practice you will find that japa practice will lead you to a much deeper understanding of yourself as you encounter new layers of your mind. Wants and hopes, duties and obligations, ideals and aspirations surface in your awareness. Others choose to use one of the great Vedic mantras such as the Gayatri mantra ( May my mind be guided by divine light ) or the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra ( May the Lord lead me to freedom from fears and attachments ).

Of course, it can be difficult at times to deal with normal frustrations or problems of existence, as well as with people who are spiritually stagnant and unawake, or who have dismal attitudes toward life. However, with applied spiritual knowledge and growth, living a constructive life with a positive attitude, in spite of whatever challenges come our way, will be a natural by-product of our inner development.
