Odes is an album of Greek folk songs by Irene Papas and Vangelis. All of the songs are traditional, except two which are original compositions by Vangelis. Recorded in Nemo studios, London 1979, the entirety of the album is performed and produced by Vangelis, with the addition of a five-people choir in the opening track and of course, Irene Papas' lead vocals. First issue of the album on compact disc was in Greece only (Polydor 833 864-2).

Odes features the most inspired collaboration imaginable. It is a collection of compositions by Vangelis with vocals by the great operatic singer Irene Papas. The vocals, in Greek, become an important instrument of Vangelis' sound design. He has a knack for knowing when to push the instrumental and when to allow Papas' vocals to dominate - even to the point of some a cappella renderings. Papas is as sharp as ever; Vangelis is always right there. The atmospheres are strong and the soundscapes are dramatic and dynamic. This hard-to-get classic is essential.

Odes is the first collaboration album between Vangelis and Irene Papas, who is both a renowned greek singer and actress. She became famous with acting in movies as The Guns of Navarone Zorba the Greek and "Z", and later in Captain's Corelli Mandolin. She also created many movies based on the original plays of Euripides and already worked with Vangelis on Aphrodite's Child's 666. All tunes Irene sings on this album are Greek traditional melodies to which Vangelis adds two instrumental tracks . Odes is one of Vangelis' best moments from the late 70s'. Quite original, Irene Papas' voice opens a new dimension to his music.

This early CD release suffers from several mastering errors. A noise gate added to filter out a microphone hum inherent in the original recording causes a severe cutoff during quiet moments at the end of 'LeFleuve' and intermittently during 'Les Kolokotronei' whenever Papas takes a breath. There is also a brief digital stutter during 'Menousis'. It's better to stick with the Polydor releases which do not have these problems
