The Gap Band is the second album by The Gap Band in 1977 on Tattoo Records. This is not to be confused with the 1979 Mercury Records self-titled album. Charles Wilson – keyboards, lead vocals. Robert Wilson – bass, vocals. Ronnie Wilson – trumpet, electric piano, vocals. James Macon – guitar. Tommy Lokey – trumpet. Chris Clayton – alto and tenor saxophone, vocals. The Gap Band – percussion, backing vocals. Rick Calhoun – drums. Leon Russell – piano.

Many Gap Band fans think that 1979's The Gap Band was the Wilson Brothers' first album, but, in fact, it was their third. Before becoming well-known, they recorded 1974's Magician's Holiday for Shelter and 1977's The Gap Band (which shouldn't be confused with this album, although both are self-titled) for Tattoo. However, this release marked several firsts for the Gap Band - it was their first album for Mercury, their first collaboration with producer Lonnie Simmons, and the first Gap Band album that was commercially successful

The Gap Band has released over 30 albums. Since their inception in 1967, the Gap Band has released 15 studio albums, 13 compilation albums and 2 live albums. They released nine self-titled albums (including two of the same name).
