Using samplers and DJ gear in place of guitars and drums, the expanded Doldrums have come up with a hyper-detailed prog-dance-pop odyssey inspired by Henry Miller’s The Air Conditioned Nightmare, a book of essays despairing at the divorce between man and nature the writer saw after his repatriation to the US in 1945. Basically, it’s not a record that’s short on ambition. Conflict is at the heart of this album, says Airick. There’s a lot of paranoid sentiment and dystopian imagery in there. The threat of a mundane reality ties it together, as does an obsession with plasticity.

The Air Conditioned Nightmare, the newest effort from Montreal-based ball act Doldrums, has me stumped. Bandleader Airick Woodhead’s sultry, genderless vocals seem to feed off of the chaos with delight, amused at my hesitance as he leads me through a whirlwind bender. If Doldrums have a modus operandi, it’s embracing reckless abandon. Hotfoot, with its thick, bouncy, addictive synths paired with Airick’s playful flair, would be the album highlight if not for Loops.

Nestled in these adrenalised, highly evolved songs are bright pop hooks, showing that other artists could compete with Doldrums, but they wouldn’t be able to keep up. Take the red pill and enter down the rabbit hole.

This album has all the techniques that should be a part of radio play in our modern times of the usual lame mainstream. One of the best albums of this year. This album is the bomb! With The Air Conditioned Nightmare, his sophomore album scheduled for release this April, he takes a decidedly more narrative approach made possible by a newly stable recording environment and his current home at the iconic Sub Pop Records. The album is best characterised as restless. Dark and danceable, the anxiety-provoking beats are tempered by Woodhead's androgynous voice. He bills the result as a twisted "road trip record" through the 40s New York of the 1945 Henry Miller novel by the same name. Then I started making tape collages in my dad's basement when I was 14. I think that process, more than anything else, is what Doldrums has come out of. And Canada at the time was a really exciting place for independent music. I followed my nose to Montreal, because that's where a lot of similarly minded people were, and I fell in love with all of the bands on Arbutus Records.
