Mark Heard created a tradition of going the extra mile on his records. He wrote lyrics that had real honesty packed in tight, and yet he still managed drop some tongue-in-cheek one-liners. The effect was that when he was cheeky, you still had to take him seriously. Stop the Dominoes is a classic version of this. He had a lot to say. The liner notes are incredible. CCM records routinely included all the lyrics printed out on the sleeve, but in addition, Mark included 2 full pages of small print, written from his heart to his fans. Mark Heard was one of the most thoughtful songwriters, and gone much too soon and much too young.

Once heard, however, you’re hooked. The album finds Nelson more focused than many of his contemporaries in the 90s, ensuring that his songs aren’t swamped by the overarching themes that bring them together. 35: Semisonic: Feeling Strangely Fine (March 1998) The temptation may be to reduce Semisonic to ‘Closing Time’, the N. 1 US and Top 25 UK hit for which the band are mostly remembered. SOme I haven’t heard but intend to investigate. One you missed was TOUCH – a 1969 release by the band of the same name. I will think of many more.

It really hasn’t aged one bit. SUN ELECTRIC Present (R&S, 1996). Hippy-dippy kosmische meets gnarly acid techno on this ’94 album by Mark Gage, which was released both as an LP double-pack and as a mixed CD. Its up tracks kick hard for the squat-party-people, but the wistful, whacked-out ambient passages wouldn’t sound out of place on a FUSE record. As such it’s no real surprise that Plus8 gave Themes its US release. Read this next:Part 2 of the 15 greatest techno albums you’ve never heard.
