Hell's Ditch is the fifth studio album by The Pogues, released in November 1990, and the last to feature frontman Shane MacGowan as a member. Hell's Ditch continued the group's slow departure from Irish music, giving more emphasis to rock and straight folk rock, and forsaking their earlier staples of traditional compositions almost entirely
Hell's Ditch is perhaps The Pogues' most dwelling album into the counterculture of mythic piracy and celtic rowdiness. Shane MacGowan, the band's chief songwriter and vocalist provides his usual, uncanny, slurred, drunken vocals, with the help of traditional celtic barroom music behind his vindictive narratives. The lyrical content (I believe as said by Med) is almost completely incomprehendable, yet manages to purvey images exactly of what MacGowan is saying. The history of the Pogues' substance abuse, and rowdy music is an enjoyable listen.

If Hell's Ditch had been released by another band and therefore not compared to the Pogues' first three LPs, more listeners would recognize it for the wonderful rock album it is. MacGowan's voice is ragged, but it drips with attitude and oozes anger. Perhaps producer Joe Strummer's punk sensibilities made the difference. Most of the album, despite typical Pogues' acoustic instrumentation, rocks hard. Only three cuts use an electric guitar. While there are some other instruments that the band didn't normally use in the past, they're not those typically found in a rock band.
