The new War On Drugs album is a winning combination of psychedelic rock, krautrock, folk, and Americana-just like the band's last album, but better.
Lost in the Dream is the third studio album by American indie rock band The War on Drugs, released on March 18, 2014 through Secretly Canadian. The recording session, which took place over a two-year period, was characterized by numerous rewrites. The album's lyrical themes were influenced by the loneliness and depression Granduciel faced after he finished touring.
Work on follow-up third album Lost in the Dream began while the band was on tour in 2012, with the full process of writing, demoing, and recording stretching out over a 15-month period and employing five different studios in as many states. Instead of resulting in a piecemeal pastiche of discordant ideas, Lost in the Dream actually represents the most fully realized statement from the group thus far, with all ten songs gelling together with a sense of purpose and understated brilliance the band came close to before, but delivers in full here

Alexis Petridis recommends War on Drugs' third album, Lost in the Dream, a sprawling epic revolving around a deeply unconventional juxtaposition of styles. Combining experimental, hazy psychedelia and 80s rock, it manages to sound both expansive and claustrophobic - emotive and deeply enjoyable. Alexis Petridis, theguardian. What you should hear this week.
The album is loaded with songs whose greatness is revealed slowly, where the simplest, most understated chord change can blow a track wide open and elevate it from simply pretty to absolutely devastating. Through out "Lost in the Dream" I reminded both of early U2 and Don Henley. The album has a sound removed from current trends in Indie rockThrough out "Lost in the Dream" I reminded both of early U2 and Don Henley. The album has a sound removed from current trends in Indie rock music and the results on show are solid. There is a lack of any standout track, in fact the tracks blend into each other quite cohesively.
The band had previously existed somewhat in the shadow of Kurt Vile (former band member and collaborator), but all of that changed in 2011 with the release of Slave Ambient. That album found its way on to many year-end lists, and the comedown from the tour to support it provides much of the backdrop to Lost In The Dream. This is pretty intense stuff to be sure, but it’s this sort of added weight that takes the album to another level.
Though Lost In The Dream is undeniably top heavy, the second half of the album without a doubt features some beautiful tracks. Eyes In The Wild contains some of the best atmospheric elements on the album and Burning kicks off with an impressive build up. However, these songs start to reveal that many of these songs start to sound the same after a while. The album brings to mind a long road trip with friends due to its upbeat percussion and mostly feel good vibe. Sometimes the lyrics are not always comprehensible so that only adds to the effect of what the album is trying to convey. It makes for an imaginative listening experience made for the listener to be taken away in its outstanding execution and beauty.
The 10-track album was recorded at studios in Philadelphia, North Carolina, New York, and New Jersey during the band’s two-plus-year world tour behind 2011′s rather excellent Slave Ambient. According to a press release, Lost In The Dream is a familiar kick in the gut, reminding listeners what music is supposed to sound like, making you want to run Rocky-style through the streets (or at least us anyways).
