Five years after their inaugural Motown compendium, UMC jump aboard the RSD Express with a sophomore set comprising 19 stone cold soul gems. While it features a number of evergreen classics ("Machine Gun" anyone?) there's a strong theme of less obvious tracks from some of Motown's myriad legends
Features Song Lyrics for The Contours's The Motown Story, Volume I: The 1960s album. The Contours - The Motown Story, Volume I: The 1960s Album. Artist: The Contours. Send "The Contours" Ringtones to your Cell. Album: The Motown Story, Volume I: The 1960s.
One of the most dominating forces in the history of popular music, the Motown imprint was more than a label, it was a juggernaut of soul music, a machine so finely honed and working with such efficiency that it wasn't uncommon for several chart topping hits to be recorded in one session. This anthology was previously issued in 2000 under the moniker Motown: The Classic Years. Names like Marvin, Stevie, and Diana, as well as groups like the Temptations, the Four Tops, the Contours, and the Supremes. Songs that defined moments decades after their release ("Do You Love Me," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine") and songs that forever changed the face of popular music ("My Girl," "What's Going On," "War").
As Motown was completing its relocation to LA, great artists and songwriting teams were being shed left and right while the company was putting out loads of product by instantly forgettable mediocrities with their SoCal rock (some of it laughably pretentious) and watered-down generic soul that never would have made it through quality control in the sixties. There are even some unabashed MOR tracks that will have you lunging for the "skip" button
For Motown to purport that any slapdash collection of this kind contains every great song from the label's storied history is an insult not only to consumers but to the artists themselves. 01. Diana Ross & The Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go 02. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - Shop Around 03. Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - Dancing In The Street 04.
