He is a national poet of Poland, and is regarded as one of the greatest poets in all of Polish and European literature. Pan Tadeusz (full title Sir Thaddeus, or the Last Lithuanian Foray. A Nobleman's Tale from the Years of 1811 and 1812 in Twelve Books of Verse) is an epic poem by the Polish poet, writer and philosopher Adam Mickiewicz. The book was first published on 28 June 1834 in Paris, and is considered by many to be the last great epic poem in European literature. Its poetic rhythm is Polish alexandrines.

Mickiewicz wrote Pan Tadeusz in a characteristic Polish meter, thirteen-syllable alexandrines. Johnston has transposed it into the classic English iambic pentameter, and made wonderful use of enjambment, half-rhymes and similar devices that feel like real poetry which has stood the test of time and sound right to the contemporary reader. Thus writes Adam Mickiewicz as he completes Pan Tadeusz in the early 1830s. His country had been partitioned between Austria, Prussia and Russia in 1793 (the last piece went in 1795). That Poland had included what is now Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine, so this tale of Lithuania is nevertheless the national epic of Poland.
