I'm thinking tonight Of the o-old rustic bridge That bends o'er the murmuri-ing stream It was there Maggie dear With our hearts full of cheer We strayed 'neath the moo-oon's gentle beam. Twas there I first met you The light in your eyes Awoke in my heart a sweet thrill Though now far away Still my thoughts fondly stray To the old rustic bri-idge by the mill. Beneath it a stream gently rippled Around it the bir-irds loved to trill Though now far away Still my thoughts fondly stray To the old rustic bri-idge by the mill
Seeing the old man sitting there for a long time, the speaker went to him and asked him where he came from. The old man answered that he was coming from San Carlos, his native town, twelve kilometers away from there. The man smiled as it was a pleasure to him to mention his native land. Then the speaker had a chat with that man and came to know that the seventy-six years old man had no one but pets - two goats, a cat and eight pigeons. They were his family and he spent his time looking after the animals. Now that the enemy forces were approaching, he was asked to leave the place . Ernest Hemingway's economical short story "Old Man at the Bridge" first appeared in Ken Magazine (Volume 1, Number 4, May 19, 1938) prior to its later publication in the book The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories, also published in 1938. The Fifth Column is Hemingway's only full-length play and also includes all of his previously published short stories. Although employed by the North American Newspaper Association (NANA), Hemingway apparently decided to submit it to Ken Magazine as a short story instead of using it as a news article. As Hemingway observes the movement of vehicles and civilians fleeing across the pontoon bridge from an anticipated enemy attack, he notices a solitary old man sitting at the edge of the structure.
