Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was an American singer and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King". Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family when he was 13 years old. His music career began there in 1954, recording at Sun Records with producer Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African American music to a wider audience.
Elvis Presley, though, is the ultimate rock'n'roll star, a white guy who sounded like a black man(which in the mid-fifties was important in a more racist time), who looked great and epitomized the rebellious side to pop music, although it does seem rather tame by today's standards, and he brought rock'n'roll into the mainstream. Elvis would be the King of Rock and Roll because back in the early days of Rock and Roll there was so much segregation to where black performers couldn’t get the audiences that white performers could. Elvis was instrumental to making Rock and Roll mainstream. He certainly was the biggest artist back then.
