Cast Away is the second album by symphonic power metal band Visions of Atlantis, and was released in 2004. Metal Hammer Germany wrote that the album was arranged rather simple and less spectacular than contemporary releases by Nightwish or Within Temptation. Some refrains and intros of Cast Away were even criticised for being almost kitsch.

Visions of Atlantis is a metal band from Styria, Austria, founded in 2000. Inspiration came both from successful symphonic power metal band Nightwish and from the myth of Atlantis. Fascinated by the myth of Atlantis, Werner Fiedler, Thomas Caser, Christian Stani, and Chris Kamper decided in August 2000 to work out a concept inspired by the secret of Atlantis. Late in summer mezzo-soprano Nicole Bogner joined the project, and this was the birth of Visions of Atlantis.

Cast Away" is the second studio album by Austrian Symphonic metal band "Visions of Atlantis" originally released in 2004. Cast Away" was the last album to feature female lead singer Nicole Bogner alongside guitarist Werner Fiedler, male singer Mario Plank, bassist Mike Koren, drummer Thomas Caser and keyboardist Miro Holly. Visions of Atlantis" were one of the first bands to experiment with mixing male and female vocals over a symphonic melodic/power metal basis  . Visions of Atlantis's music has a synth and pop feel to it (singer Nicole Bogner fits well with this), and they are miles away stylistically from Nighwish's more "epic" music. They aren't clones or imitators simply because their sound is too different.

Cast Away is a densely textured keyboard driven album with catchy vocals and mesmerizing melodies that make me want to sing along with it. It is the musical equivalent of hard candy - pretty to look at and saccharine sweet, but as a fan of female fronted metal of the late-nineties and early-2000s, I eat that shit up. If there is one singular piece of criticism that defines Cast Away it would be that the band played it way too safe. Something that I have noticed from my time on the internet is that people have a tendency to compare Visions of Atlantis (and specifically Cast Away) to Evanescence. This isn't the most ludicrous idea ever, on paper the two bands do have a lot in common. Hell, this album was mastered at the same Stirling Sound Studio that Fallen was mastered in, but I find Evanescence to be too dark to make an adequate comparison.
