Rocket is Philadelphia-based artist Alex G’s eighth full-length release-an assured statement that follows a slate of humble masterpieces, many of them self-recorded and self-released, stretching from 2010’s RACE to his 2015 Domino debut, Beach Music. I first heard of (Sandy) Alex G, who’s real name is Alex Giannascoli, at the beginning of 2017, through a Pitchfork article detailing the release of his newest album Rocket. Needless to say, I liked (Sandy) Alex G immediately. It is admittedly a shame that Giannascoli is constantly associated with Ocean as of late- even if such association helps to draw new fans. However, the similarities between the two are evident: Both artists are enigmatic, quiet social media presences that speak primarily through their music, and both are fond of using unconventional song structure to tell vivid stories of outcast characters. But unlike Ocean, the stakes of an Alex G project feel lower and more intimate.
