Take-Offs and Put-Ons is the second album and first solo album by American comedian George Carlin. Recorded in Detroit, Michigan at the Roostertail on November 25, 26 and 27, 1966, the album was first released in 1967 as RCA Victor LSP-3772 and was nominated for a Grammy award later that year. Many of the routines and characters were already familiar to audiences due to the comedian's performances on television programs such as The Mike Douglas Show and The Merv Griffin Show.

George Carlin's debut comedy album captures him during the tail end of his period as a "straight" (. short-haired) comedian (a period in which he also played a short-lived role on the series That Girl), and not that far from his subsequent counterculture emergence. Apart from the soap opera parody Doctor Place in the "Daytime Television" monologue, which seems slow and terribly dated, and "The Indian Sergeant" (which is in a category by itself), any part of this record could have fit onto his subsequent FM & AM.

More silly absurdism than the biting satire he'd later be known for, this record is a send up of late 60s mainstream radio and television. It's neat to hear Carlin still developing his style and while it's not his greatest work, it is proof that he could be funny with clean material too. This copy is the 1972 re-issue. It was given to us by Erin's ( ightinthekitchen) dad from his collection.
