Jerry Hahn is known as one of jazz’s high-ranking guitarists. He became a key name in the 1960s for his input to the up-and-coming fusion movement, and has remained one of its dedicated promoters until today. At the age of 7 he began playing the guitar and was playing professionally with the Bobby Wiley Rhythmaires at the age of 11. He joined the John Handy Quintet in 1964 and was recording two albums for Columbia Records with them

Having played in Gary Burton’s quartet after Larry Coryell and before Mick Goodrick, Jerry Hahn is an overlooked figure in the modern pantheon. He was destined, perhaps, to release a solo guitar recording, if only to give it the classic title Hahn Solo. On this concise set of standards he plays the Gibson L-4 that Bill Frisell gave him as a gift. The clean, broad stereo sweep of his sound brings to mind John Abercrombie, who surely checked out Hahn while coming up through the ranks.

Interesting, eclectic set of five originals (all but one written by Hahn), from a date including Jack DeJohnette on drums. Some of the cuts swing pretty well in a bop-Django Reinhardt sort of fusion, with Michael White on violin. Ragahantar" and "Ara-Be-In," by contrast, are fusions of jazz with middle-eastern music and a bit of a psychedelic rock drive, not unlike the kinds of things that a rock group of the period, Kaleidoscope, would occasionally try on their albums.
