Neal Smith (born September 23, 1947) is an American musician, best known as the drummer for the rock group Alice Cooper from 1967 to 1974. He performed on the group's early albums Pretties for You and Easy Action, their breakout album Love It to Death and the subsequent successful albums Killer, School's Out, and Billion Dollar Babies. The last new studio album with the five original Alice Cooper group members participating in new music was Muscle of Love in 1973.

The classic Alice Cooper group lineup consisted of Furnier, lead guitarist Glen Buxton, rhythm guitarist Michael Bruce, bassist Dennis Dunaway, and drummer Neal Smith. With the exception of Smith, who graduated from Camelback High School (which is referred to in the song "Alma Mater" on the album School's Out), all of the band members were on the Cortez High. School cross-country team, and many of Cooper's stage effects were inspired by their cross-country coach, Emmett Smith

Neal Smith - "I'm Eighteen". They're Playing My Song is a column by Bruce Pollock, where he focuses on the one song that had the greatest impact on a particular artist or songwriter's career. Here, he speaks with original Alice Cooper drummer/songwriter Neal Smith. Neal Smith: "Living," the single from our first album Pretties For You came out in 1969 on Frank Zappa's Straight Records. In 1970 we recorded our second album, Easy Action, and the single was called "Shoe Salesman," which was a weird song even for us, kind of casual and jazzy. The first album sold 12,000 copies and went to on the charts; Easy Action didn't even chart

Killer was Cooper's first Top 20 album to rock the charts. It also was one of the first albums in his arsenal to uniquely blend his theatrical stage show persona with prog-rock and heavy metal workouts which have since become classic rock anthems. Teaming up again with his long time producer Bob Ezrin, Alice Cooper and his legendary band (Michael Bruce: guitar/keys, Glen Buxton: lead guitar, Neal Smith: drums and Dennis Dunaway: bass) assembled some of their finest material ever for this platinum plus effort.
