The album marks a departure from the synthpop style that brought MGMT acclaim on their debut, Oracular Spectacular, released three years prior, and features a more psychedelic, progressive and guitar-driven sound.

The final track of MGMT’s second album Congratulations returns to the jangling ‘60s pop stylings of Waterloo Sunset. It’s smooth and charming and sidesteps the awkward hooks of the rest of the album. But it’s Congratulations' lyrics here that are most important. As Andy VanWyngarden sings that all he wants are your congratulations, he reveals the whole point of the album. MGMT don’t need – or necessarily want – a big selling album. They want recognition and credibility. And they deserve them.

MGMT follow the surprise hit Oracular Spectacular by teaming with Spacemen 3's Sonic Boom for a leftfield psych-pop LP bereft of obvious singles. No such moments exist on Congratulations. Hell, there aren't even failed attempts at replicating those songs here. This time out, MGMT aren't crafting pop; they're Creating Art. The problem is that many of the half-million or so people who bought their debut, Oracular Spectacular, just want a couple catchy-as-fuck, ear-candy singles to blast in their cars or put on with their friends.
