Don't Stand Me Down is the third studio album by Dexys Midnight Runners, released in September 1985. The title of the album was inspired by a line in the album's song "The Waltz". The album was released three years after their second album, the internationally successful Too-Rye-Ay.
Dexys Midnight Runners – Knowledge Of Beauty by UniversalMusicUK. One of Those Things’ follows, Rowland describes himself as embarrassed at my arrogance’ for stealing the riff from Warren Zevon’s Werewolves of London’ who now owns part of the song. There is further use of the conversational approach to outline Rowland’s view on the state of music in the mid 80’s (now there’s a theme), the trendy left and the Irish problem which all sounded the same’. The album finishes with the song that Rowland chose to start with on the 2003 comeback tour, The Waltz’, another song about his feelings for Ireland. It is a sweeping and fitting finale to an album that saw Rowland and Dexys expand and mature musically, while still maintaining lyrics of biting intensity.
Though derided at the time for its long song lengths and rambling lyrics, Don’t Stand me Down has been looked back on as a cult classic. In this album, singer Kevin Rowland presents the listener with a musical conversation, giving the listener an insight into his life and thoughts. After releasing this album, the band continued to make new singles for another year before breaking up. There was no new material from the band until the 2010s, when they came back as Dexys. The album was rereleased, slightly restructured, in 2002. This is known as the ‘Director’s Cut’
Quite frankly, the album was a mess, with half the songs sounding like extemporized intros, and the rest seemingly trapped within their own middle eights. The fact that the Smiths, to name but one, had long since made a virtue of such intricacies was irrelevant - the world wanted another "Come on Eileen. Instead they got "The Occasional Flicker," a rant that apparently went out of its way to disrupt those demands. Ah, but it's such a magnificent disruption.

Don't Stand Me Down was brave and different to Too-Rye-Ay. Rowland had a clear vision and went to great lengths to record and mix it to his own specifications. His interest in his Irish roots and Irish politics was one of the themes of the record. Produced by Laura Parfitt A White Pebble Media Production for BBC Radio 4. Show less.
