Morris On is a folk/rock album released in 1972 under the joint names of Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson, Dave Mattacks, John Kirkpatrick and Barry Dransfield. Like the subsequent "Descendant Of" Morris On albums (see below), it features English Morris dance tunes and songs, played with a combination of traditional instruments (button accordion, concertina, fiddle, et. and modern ones (electric guitar, bass, drums).

John Kirkpatrick's work on accordion and concertina was definitely great. Barry Dransfield did a great job on fiddle with the first track "Morris Call. Richard Thompson's work as a guitar player isn't anything that will be voted as anything great in Guitar World magazine, but it works with the music. None of these musicians do anything to really showcase themselves as musicians, but they work for the music. Not strictly a Richard Thompson album, although he does contribute guitar and some vocals. Morris On was masterminded by bassist Ashley Hutchings shortly after leaving Steeleye Span. Seeking to meld rock and roll with the English country folk tradition, he gathered old chums Thompson, John Kirkpatrick, Barry Dransfield and Dave Mattacks to produce a weird and wonderful concoction of turbocharged folk dances with the unlikely accompaniment of morris bells and sticks.

In 1972 three former members of Fairport Convention - Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson and Dave Mattacks - got together with accordion-maestro John Kirkpatrick and acclaimed folk fiddler Barry Dransfield to record this ground breaking album. The results were quite extraordinary and led to a re-examination of the Morris tradition and the formation of many new dance sides.
