Double F - Double S (Stereo Demonstration Record) (7", EP, RP). Decca.
A double album (or double record) is an audio album which spans two units of the primary medium in which it is sold, typically records and compact disc. A double album is usually, though not always, released as such because the recording is longer than the capacity of the medium.
Double albums during the Seventies were sometimes sequenced for record changers. In the case of a two-record set, for example, sides 1 and 4 would be stamped on one record, and sides 2 and 3 on the other. Stereo 8 was created in 1964 by a consortium led by Bill Lear of Lear Jet Corporation, along with Ampex, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Motorola, and RCA Victor Records (RCA). It was a further development of the similar Stereo-Pak four-track cartridge created by Earl "Madman" Muntz. Live double albums emerged during the 1970s. Appraising the concept in Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies (1981), Robert Christgau said most "are profit-taking recaps marred by sound and format inappropriate to phonographic reproduction (you can't put sights, smells, or fellowship on audio tape).

Stereo experiments on disc. Early lateral, vertical and double-sided stereo. Edison had been recording in a hill-and-dale or vertically modulated format on his cylinders and discs since 1877, and Berliner had been recording in a side-to-side or lateral format since shortly thereafter. Nevertheless, many record companies released stereo "demonstration" records to help promote stereo. These records often included instructions for setting up a stereo system, 'balancing' the speakers, and a variety of ambient recordings to show off the stereo effect. When playing back stereo recordings, the best results are obtained by using two identical speakers, in front of and equidistant from the listener, with the listener located on a center line between the two speakers.

Called the ‘Double M-S’ or ‘MSM’ array, it offers several unique advantages and, usefully, the position of its two central mics can be altered to create a very versatile multi-directional (not necessarily ‘surround’) array with excellent mono compatibility. This makes it a good contender in situations such as recording a singing guitarist, where you might want some separation between two sources but wish to retain some sense of stereo width, or sources such as choirs, where it might be desirable to capture both the front and the rear in stereo. Double M-S. Although a brilliantly clever system, early SoundField mics were relatively bulky, and their three-dimensional sound imaging is not a requirement for conventional (. and . ) surround-sound.
