The singer and guitarist Mark Brend and his long-term collaborator, the bass player Matt Gale, started recording in Palace of Light in the early 1980s. Their lone album drew inspiration from the late-1960s singer-songwriter years, before CD-reissue culture contextualised it. Anyone who has read American Troubadours, Brend's brilliant book on the genre, will be primed for his current band, Fariña, which formed in the mid-1990s, updating the aesthetic.
