The front cover of Mick Flannery’s fifth album – ominously entitled I Own You – invites a certain amount of contemplation. Previous releases have been packaged with fairly innocent and benign images of the singer which do not aspire to any higher meaning. The image at the centre of I Own You, however, is far from innocuous. The menacing image of a young child wielding a golf club and wearing a skeletal animal mask is a symbolic representation of the singer’s disenchantment with a world rife with injustice

An award-winning, double-platinum selling artist, Mick Flannery is on the brink of releasing not only his self-titled sixth album, but also overseeing the worldwide premiere of the stage musical, Evening Train (so named after his 2007 debut album). He began to write songs as a teenager in his home of Blarney, County Cork. Facets of the theme are on the album, but the storyline itself isn’t an overarching one - each song can stand on its own, and not need to be part of a narrative. For live shows, he says, it’s comforting.
Cork singer Mick Flannery rages against society's manifold injustices on his blistering new album I Own You. But this being Mick Flannery, there is also time for dark humour and sadness. He talks to Alan Corr. It is lunchtime on Budget Day in a bar in Dublin city centre and Mick Flannery is trying to make himself heard over the sound of Common People by Pulp on the pub’s speakers. He places his cheeky mid-day pint down on the table and avers, Well, at least I’m competing with the greats.
