The Don Cossack Choir Serge Jaroff (Хор донских казаков Сергея Жарова) was a men's chorus of exiled Cossacks founded in 1921 by Serge Jaroff and conducted for almost sixty years by him. After suffering total defeat at the hands of the Red Army, many Cossacks ended up in the diaspora. In 1921 it was with these very Russian refugees that Serge Jaroff set about forming a choir in the Turkish internment camp Çilingir, near Istanbul.
Thereby known as the Don Cossacks (or Muscovy Cossacks – as called by their southern Muslim foes), these semi-nomadic people formed a buffer state of sorts, with their stronghold at Cherkassk (presently known as Starocherkasskaya) on the right bank of the Don river.
The Don Cossacks were revived in the early 1990s and were officially recognised by the Russian Federation Government in 1997. In 1992 they joined the separatists forces during the Transnistria Wa.There still exist several "Organisations of Anti-communist Cossacks Outside Russia.
Don Cossacks or Donians, are Cossacks who settled along the middle and lower Don. Historically, they have been located within what was the Don Cossack Host, which was either an independent or an autonomous democratic republic in the present-day Southern Russia and the Donbass region of Ukraine, from the end of the 16th century until 1918.
The Monument to the Don Cossacks (Russian: Памятник казакам Тихого Дона) is a monument near khutor of Kruzhilinskiy, Rostov oblast, Russia. The monument is located on the R271 highway that runs from Millerovo to Vyoshenskaya. It was designed by sculptors N. Mozhaev, E. Mozhaeva, N. Shcherbakov. The monument was opened in May 1994. It portrays a Don Cossack. The statue is 6 meters tall, not including its 8-metre barrow.
