Ultra is the ninth studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 14 April 1997 by Mute Records. It was the band's first album following the departure of Alan Wilder, who had become disillusioned with life in the band. Wilder's departure and lead singer Dave Gahan's drug problems, which culminated in a near-fatal overdose, had caused speculation that Depeche Mode was finished.

Depeche Mode release their twelfth album, the aptly titled 'Ultra' on April 14 on Mute. Following 1993's platinum selling, No. 1 album, 'Songs Of Faith And Devotion', 'Ultra' was recorded and produced in New York, Los Angeles and London during the last year by Tim Simenon. Including the hit singles 'Barrel Of A Gun' and 'It's No Good', 'Ultra' unveils a sophisticated soundscape that draws influence from contemporary dance, gospel, blues and even country sources.

does this remaster sound good on vinyl? Is it better than the original pressing? Worth it?

Not as immediate as Depeche Mode's other work, and a little bit on the long side, but whenever I play this I'm always taken aback by how good it is. The band's history (and Daniel Miller's weirdly disparaging essay in the gatefold) kind of writes this off as an also-ran, but the first half in particular is very strong, and the production is really excellent - heavy and subtle all at once, somehow, with just enough polish to give the singles a wicked punch. This pressing is flawless - so spacious and detailed with killer bass and very quiet background. I'm really pleased they didn't split it into two discs as they might have done, because It's No Good stirring and then exploding into the album's best pop moment straight after the subdued, beautiful Home is such a rush.
