Doc Holliday became practically a household name, an archetype of the Old West. Holliday was a close friend of Wyatt Earp, a well-known gunfighter and deputy town marshal in Tombstone, Arizona. In 1881, Earp’s brother Virgil was the deputy . marshal as well as being Tombstone’s chief of police. On October 26, he learned that a group of cowboys had entered the town and refused to hand over their weapons. At that time, the law required all non-local men who carried guns to temporarily deposit them at local stables or saloons upon entering town. In a fiery shootout that only lasted about 30 seconds, the Earp brothers and Holliday killed three of the men. Historians believe that Doc Holliday killed Tom McLaury with a shotgun blast to the chest. It seems that the cowboys underestimated their opponents’ skills; although Holliday was wounded, the party quickly subdued the intruding cowboys.

On this album, it's all good in their little corner of the world: Guitarist Ira Kaplan sails away on perfect guitar drones like "We're an American Band," drummer Georgia Hubley croons the feedback lullaby "Shadows," and bassist James McNew warbles the acoustic lament "Stockholm Syndrome. Yo La Tengo also find time for a couple of space-disco novelties, a noisy Beach Boys cover and a few silly love songs, adding up to the kickiest album of their stellar career. Going Back to Cali" is a chilling counterpoint to the album's final three songs, answers to the beef with Death Row that haunted Biggie for the last year of his life. The Unsolved Mystery of the Notorious . Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time: Notorious . s 'Life After Death'.

Their second album, Doc Holliday Rides Again topped that success. The band played many shows in that time, with Black Sabbath and others. Due to the failure of their third, experimental album in 1983 and the stress of touring, the band broke up in 1983. They re-united in the 1990s. Since, they brought out more albums, and toured, mainly in Europe. They disbanded in 2011. 25 Absolutely Live - 2008. Gunfighter - The Best of the '90s - 2003.
