The Red Gold EP, which is really more of a mini-album than an extended-play single per se, is the second Red Krayola release this year - an accomplishment that is no mean feat in and of itself. Throughout the band's 40-year history and ever-changing lineup, the only constant is longstanding singer/songwriter Mayo Thompson, whose gruff, southern-fried vocal delivery is a Red Krayola trademark

In line with the usual way such releases go, the EP isn't as important a statement as Introduction, but Red Gold does offer a fair amount of substance in its limited six-track, 21-minute space. Half of the tracks are instrumentals which, in keeping with the Red Krayola aesthetic, have nothing particularly predictable or in common except for a sense of droll whimsy.

Red Krayola (formerly The Red Crayola) was a psychedelic experimental rock band from Houston, Texas, formed by art students at the University of St. Thomas (Texas) in 1966. The band was led by singer/guitarist and visual artist Mayo Thompson, along with drummer Frederick Barthelme (brother of novelist Donald Barthelme) and Steve Cunningham. Their work prefigured punk, post-punk, indie rock and the no wave scene in 1980s New York City.
