Kate Tempest - 'Everybody Down'. The London poet's debut is a tragic, redemptive rap fable indebted to The Streets 'A Grand Don't Come For Free'. Kate Tempest is 27 years old, a poet from Brockley, south London, and recipient of the Ted Hughes Award for her 2012 piece Brand New Ancients . The result is both a 12-track album and a modern-day London fable: a tale of love, tragedy and redemption as elegantly plotted as The Streets’ ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’. It begins with strobes and the stench of sweat.
You need to hear this. Kate Tempest’s name is apt. Her rapped spoken word poetry is at once aggressive, vulnerable and unpredictable. It ebbs and flows and often threatens to overwhelm the listener in its matter of fact delivery. The naked honesty of her verse is incisive, disarming and has drawn inevitable comparisons to John Cooper Clarke and Mike Skinner of The Streets. Anyone who witnessed her absolutely captivating Brand New Ancients production with The Battersea Arts Centre, will know that these comparisons are at very least justified and, in fact, potentially sell her a little short.
Kate Tempest occupies a pretty tiny pool of Lewisham residents who’ve refashioned both rap and poetry to international acclaim, but she’s made a big splash. As well as winning poetry awards including the prestigious Ted Hughes Award, Tempest’s work has impressed Chuck D, GZA and Roots Manuva, and after eighteen months’ touring theatres with Brand New Ancients, a 75-minute poem accompanied by a classical live score, debut hip hop album Everybody Down sees the rapper-turned-poet revisit old ground with sharp, fresh eyes. Focussed on hustling café bosses and pilled-up partiers, the album’s themes are the complex moral networks that sustain us, or the importance of understanding one another’s perspectives. For all the intricacy, though, right now Tempest is happy just to be revisiting her rap roots. How does Everybody Down relate to the novel you're writing? Oh, man!
Kate Tempest - Everybody Down. By Christian Cottingham, 15 May 2014, 15:30 BST. Everybody Down. 6. Release date: 19 May 2014. Enter Kate Tempest, prize-winning poet and playwright and rapper with the band Sound of Rum and here releasing her first solo album, 48 minutes of protest songs that aim at something of a State of The Union address for all those feeling a mite left behind in Cameron’s glorious Global Race. The failing meritocracy, of youthful optimism extinguished amidst dead-end jobs and student debt, of drugs and violence and relationships going sour: heavy themes abound throughout, and this isn’t an easy listen, despite the wry humour of the visual references and the slick use of samples
Kate Tempest – Everybody Down. Sello: Big Dada Recordings – BD242. Formato: Vinyl, LP, Album. The best album of 2014, in my opinion. Exceptional poetry with great beats that actually is pleasant to listen to. Kate also manages to make a complete work by tying everything together over the wide span of disc, and this is not often done well. Responder Notifícame Helpful. When all you've got is a hammer, everything looks like nails' What a great record ! ! !
