The music is woozier than Dog Bite’s first record, like the engineer was sipping some purple when he mixed it, but it creates a darker, more cerebral listening experience that pays off. This album diverges from the straightforward chillwave of the first, progressing into other realms that are heavily present during each track

By the time Dog Bite released their second album, Tranquilizers, it was a full-fledged band instead of the project of Phil Jones. With Woody Shortridge on bass and Tak Takemura on drums, Dog Bite already added more substance to Jones' pleasantly woozy dream pop on a series of EPs leading up to Tranquilizers' release. However, the band sounds more fleshed-out and focused than ever on these songs, which were inspired in part by soul legends such as Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes.

Dog Bite is actually best known for frontman Phil Jones being a former Washed Out keyboardist, although his tenure in Dog Bite is said to include more ‘60s-based soul influences along the lines of Otis Redding that I don’t quite hear in Tranquilizers. I listen to the album and am taken to the West Coast beach scene of the same era – opening song There Was Time has a stuttering, almost Tennis feel to it, making it more akin to Beach Blanket Bingo than either the soul scene or the ‘80s Casio scene
