Chris LeDoux was a rodeo cowboy who sang and recorded songs in his spare time and sold his albums from the back of his truck. With his father, he started his own record label, American Cowboy Songs, in 1970. Under that label he released 22 albums between 1971 and 1990. After gaining recognition from the 1989 Garth Brooks song, "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)" he was signed to Liberty Records, where he released 4 studio albums in four years.

It also contains nine of the songs on the 2013 Icon - missing in action are "Runaway Love" and "Silence on the Line," both minor hits - so this means Icon 2 isn't a supplement to the existing compilation so much as a second option for listeners who prefer to dig deeper with LeDoux. Icon 2 does a nice job in that regard, presenting the big hits on Icon along with a few singles that were overlooked last time around (such as "Honky Tonk World") and overall giving a good portrait of the singer's '90s work. His concerts were very popular, and often featured a mechanical bull (which he rode between songs) and fireworks. During his career LeDoux recorded thirty-six albums (many self-released) which have sold more than six million units in the United States as of January 2007. He was awarded one platinum and two gold album certifications from the RIAA, and he was nominated for a Grammy Award and the Academy of Country Music Music Pioneer Award.
