Kintsugi is the eighth studio album by American indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie, released on March 31, 2015, on Atlantic Records. Recorded at Eldorado Recording Studios, in Burbank, California, Kintsugi is produced by Rich Costey, and is the first Death Cab for Cutie album to feature an outside producer. The album was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 58th Grammy Awards.
Released March 31, 2015. 1. No Room in Frame Lyrics. The album was released on 31 March 2015. During the production of the album, lead guitarist and founding member Chris Walla announced that he was leaving the band, though he continued contributing to the recording and creative process as a full member until the album’s completion. The album title is derived from kintsugi, a type of Japanese art involving fixing broken pottery with gold, and as a philosophy of treating breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. In a Rolling Stone interview on Jan 12, 2015, bassist Nick Harmer explains the title
Death Cab for Cutie knew immediately that Kintsugi would fit perfectly as the title of their eighth studio album. Considering what we were going through internally, and with what a lot of the lyrics are about, it had a great deal of resonance for us - the idea of figuring out how to repair breaks and make them a thing of beauty, says bassist Nick Harmer. Kintsugi is the band’s first time recording with a producer other than their own Chris Walla
Instead, Kintsugi is a very Death Cab for Cutie album. There are moments of radio-ready bliss, a few songs with lyrics that slowly become affecting, a handful of forgettable diversions, and some expected trite, misguided nonsense. Gibbard never swings hard enough to strike out completely, with occasionally unfortunate production balanced by warm melodies, one of Gibbard’s greatest strengths as a musician. But even this isn’t as bad as production cliches go; the big alt-single attempt The Ghosts of Beverly Drive features a whipping hand-clap percussion trigger in the chorus familiar enough to make you think Gibbard could start singing I’ll be there for you! while Chandler and Phoebe play in a fountain. Sure, Death Cab has never been an album band, but never before have they sounded so out of step with their past selves.

This is perhaps the most emotionally mature, and most soulful Death Cab for Cutie album in years. I love Codes and Keys, and I love Narrow Stairs, but they lack serious heart compared to Kintsugi. The songwriting here is as excellent as one could be. The production might seem off-putting or distracting at first, but it does begin to feel natural and earned. It is a great, powerful conclusion to the album. It seems like Kintsugi is not loved by people nearly as much as Plans or Transatlanticism because of the different style lyrically, but I really don't mind. K is a really good album, and I would say that it is DC's best album musically. 0 of 0 users found this helpful.
