Live at Carnegie Hall is a 1973 live album by the Soul artist Bill Withers. The album was recorded on October 6, 1972 at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The duo collaborated again in 1966 on the album Intermodulation. The front cover image for Undercurrent is Toni Frissell's photograph "Weeki Wachee Spring, Florida". The album was originally released on United Artists, then reissued by Solid State in 1968. More recently, the album was reissued on EMI/Blue Note (in fact, both Blue Note and United Artists Records have been owned for a long time by EMI)
Recorded on Friday 6th October 1972, Bill Withers Live At Carnegie Hall is one of those rare in-concert albums that puts you right there in the room. It's like for one night only the Apollo in Harlem had moved 68 blocks downtown. Captured on a night of heavy rain, Withers is genuinely humbled by the reaction of his audience. His easygoing command of the situation can be heard in the band introductions in Friend Of Mine, and his passionate reminiscing about his grandmother before Grandma's Hands. His denouncement of war as, ''one big drag'' on the intro to the show-stopping anti-Vietnam I Can't Write Left Handed (later the sample for Fatboy Slim's Demons) is most poignant. As he wrote in the original notes for the album, ''in about an hour and a half that audience transformed us all from nervous, serious musicians into free and happy people. I know I'll never forget it''.
Joni Mitchell's first live album arrived at the peak of her fame. Recorded a couple months after her breakthrough Court and Spark debuted, the Canadian singer-songwriter documented the California stops on the tour supporting the new LP. Performing an expansive collection of tracks from her 1968 debut Song to a Seagull onward, Miles of Aisles carefully avoided the hits. Bill Withers, ‘Live at Carnegie Hall’ (1973).
Album · 1973 · 14 Songs. On a rainy New York City night in 1972, Bill Withers transformed Carnegie Hall into a soul revival meeting. It’s not just his warm, gritty vocals on the sweetly aching Ain’t No Sunshine or his fervent take on the gospel-infused Lean on Me. It’s the palpable connection you can hear between performer and audience in his warm patter and reminiscences. By the time he closes the evening with the 13-minute soul-stirrer Harlem, Cold Baloney, everyone in the room is a believer. Live At Carnegie Hall Bill Withers.

Finally free of touring, the Beatles next sought to be free of themselves, hitting on the rather daft concept of recording as an alias band. The idea held for all of two songs, one coda, and one album sleeve, but was retained as the central organizing and marketing feature of the band’s 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
