Kurtag: Complete Choral Works, SWR Vocal Ensemble Stuttgart/ Ensemble Modern/ Creed. The great piece here is the Songs of Despair and Sorrow, which Kurtag finally completed in 1994. The piece consists of six comparatively extended settings of Russian texts (including poems by Mandelstam, Akhmatova and Tsvetayeva) for a mixed choir and an instrumental ensemble that includes four accordions and two harmoniums, whose methods of sound production mirror the singers' breathing and whose music acquires a symbiotic relationship with the vocal lines.
