The Durutti Column are an English post-punk band formed in 1978 in Manchester, England. The band is a project of guitarist and occasional pianist Vini Reilly who is often accompanied by Bruce Mitchell on drums and Keir Stewart on bass, keyboards and harmonica. They were among the first acts signed to Factory Records by label founder Tony Wilson.

It’s this identity, carried throughout The Return of the Durutti Column that makes it such a special and unique record – not to mention the fact that original vinyl copies were housed in a sleeve made from sandpaper, deliberately designed to scratch the surface of neighbour shelf sleeves  . Unique, intricate, mysterious and beautifully made; The Return of the Durutti Column is an obscure album that deserves to be lifted out of such a status. Give it a try and drift off into Vini Reilly’s distinctive world.

A Factory Records Product, originally released in January 1980.

Thanks also to Gammer for his melody and Rowbotham, Reid and Debord for the marketing concept.

It was Tony Wilson who had the idea for the cover, following Situationist Guy Debord's book "Mémoires" also wrapped in sandpaper to destroy the adjacent books. Reid refers to Jamie Reid, who apparently wanted to title the first Sex Pistols album "Where's the Durutti Column?". Rowbotham refers to Dave Rowbotham, the former DC founder and guitarist.

This 2nd edition of the new edition comes in a die-cut sleeve (based on Peter Saville's 1979 "bar graph" Factory Records logo), with a sheet of black (instead of brown) 9"x11" glasspaper attached to the inner bag.

Tracks B6 and B7 were not part of the original LP release but are taken from 1980 Factory Benelux single The Durutti Column - Lips That Would Kiss.
