Horst Laubenthal (born 8 March 1939), real name Horst Neumaier, is a German operatic tenor and academic voice teacher. He is known internationally, both as an opera singer especially in Mozart roles such as Belmonte, Don Ottavio and Tamino, and as a concert and recital singer, with a focus on works by Johann Sebastian Bach.
This is particularly noticeable in a comparison between two recordings of Bach's Christmas Oratorio: one under Eugen Jochum, with Elly Ameling, Brigitte Fassbaender, Horst Laubenthal, and Hermann Prey (Philips, 6703037, three disks), the other under Nikolaus Harnoncourt, whose soloists comprise an anonymous choirboy, the English countertenor Paul Esswood, Kurt Equiluz, and Siegmund Nimsgern (Telefunken SK. Jochum, using traditional means and forces (Bavarian Radio Choir and Orchestra), achieves better projection of text and a more grandiloquent overview of the work as a whole. This double album also includes the less familiar but ever delightful Variations in the Italian Style.
