Porgy and Bess - opera by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward - was premiered in Boston in 1935 with Anne Brown and Todd Duncan, Alexander Smallens conducting, and the definitive version was premiered in New York, from there it gradually conquered the world. LAWRENCE WINTERS Lawrence Winters who studied with Todd Duncan sang Porgy in the 1942 revival. Then he was hired by Laszlo Halasz (New York City Center Opera) and in 1951 he was Porgy in the Goddard Lieberson production. He later went to live in Germany, Europe. Singers were Lawrence Winters, Isabelle Lucas, Ray Ellington, Barbara Elsy, Pauline Stevens, and the Linden Singers. This recording was released on various labels like Marcato (7. 13) and Imperial (ILW 513). At left the cover of the Marcato release.
Porgy and Bess (CL 1274) is a studio album by jazz musician Miles Davis, released in March 1959 on Columbia Records. The album features arrangements by Davis and collaborator Gil Evans from George Gershwin's 1935 opera of the same name. The album was recorded in four sessions on July 22, July 29, August 4, and August 18, 1958, at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City.
