Given this, 1991's Rumor and Sigh is arguably the best album for those wanting to sample Thompson's work for the first time. It captures Thompson at the top of his form on all fronts, but also gives his songs just enough polish to make them approachable for the unconverted, and though it's several shades darker than the average adult-contemporary album, it honors Thompson's obsession with romantic despair and the less pleasant quirks of fate without sounding depressing in the process.

The album was a commercial success for Thompson, and featured his biggest American hit single "I Feel So Good", as well as the fan favourite "1952 Vincent Black Lightning. The album earned Thompson a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1992.

Rumor And Sigh extended Richard’s working relationship with American producer Mitchell Froom, who had taken over the role from Thompson’s old colleague from his Fairport days, Joe Boyd, on 1986’s Daring Adventures. Froom had continued to work with Thompson on Amnesia in 1988, a fine set which paved the way for this new creative peak.

Originally released in 1991, Richard Thompson’s sixth solo album arrived during a pivotal period in the English folk-rocker’s catalog. His third collaboration with producer Mitchell Froom (and engineer Tchad Blake), the 14-song collection continued an experimental blending of Thompson’s Celtic roots and the polished, mutant rock ’n’ roll that Froom had also applied to music by Los Lobos, Crowded House, and Elvis Costello. Some fans and critics detected commercial motives; others appreciated weird, multilayered atmospherics
