Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. This procedure is used when other non-surgical treatments have failed.
Anterior cervical discectomy surgery (ACDF) is a procedure to reduce neck and back pain caused by disc problems. It involves removing an eroded or herniated disc from the neck and fusing the remaining bone. Complications include long-term pain. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is an operation to remove a degenerative or herniated disc from the neck. After the surgeon removes the damaged disc, they fuse the bones together. Fast facts on anterior cervical discectomy: During the procedure, the surgeon operates on the cervical spinal column. People with damaged discs can experience pain, stiffness, and difficulty moving.
Anterior cervical discectomy with fusion, or ACDF, is a surgery designed to relieve spinal cord or nerve root pressure in the neck by removing all or part of a damaged disc. This procedure starts with a one- to two-inch incision in the front of the neck. The thin layer of platysma muscle that lies under the skin is cut and moved aside. The pre-vertebral fascia, a thin layer of fibrous tissue that encases the spine, is dissected away, exposing the intervertebral disc. The surgeon confirms that the correct disc has been located by inserting a needle into the disc space under X-ray guidance
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Analysis of the prevertebral soft tissue (PVST) is helpful in detecting osseous and ligamentous injuries of the cervical spine. Because the standard of care has shifted from radiographs to multidetector CT (MDCT), a re-examination of the PVST on MDCT images is needed to establish normal values for thickness appropriate for this imaging technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thickness of the PVST was measured in 192 patients undergoing screening cervical spine MDCT with multiplanar reconstructions as part of a trauma protocol.
Background Context: Containment plates are often placed anteriorly in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) to provide stability and prevent migration of the interbody device or autograft. The main advantage of a bioresorbable plate over the typical metallic plate is that it will resorb after fusion has occurred, thus mitigating any long-term ted complications. Furthermore, the plates are radiolucent, allowing complete visualization of the fusion site and eliminating imaging artifact. Results: Radiographic fusion was noted in three of the 12 levels with no evidence of device failure at any of the levels. However, at necropsy, it was observed that six of the 12 specimens had either a broken screw or a cracked plate. These gross observations were confirmed within the histologic sections.
Muscle tissue is a soft tissue that composes muscles in animal bodies, and gives rise to muscles' ability to contract. This is opposed to other components or tissues in muscle such as tendons or perimysium. It is formed during embryonic development through a process known as myogenesis. Muscle tissues varies with function and location in the body.
The anterior neck is then prepped and draped, with care taken not to restrict the surgical field. Palpating the bony landmarks (or alternatively by using a radiopaque skin marker and a lateral radiograph) determines the level of the skin incision. A transverse incision is then made through the skin and subcutaneous fat, and bleeding is controlled using electrocautery. Care is taken when drilling screw holes to choose a length that will be contained in the vertebral body and be parallel with the endplate of the disc space. When the plate is in position, a lateral radiograph is obtained and graft and hardware positioning is checked (Figs.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by neurological and spinal orthopedic surgeons. Most common cause for this operation is a ruptured cervical intervertebral disk. Another reason for surgery are spurs that irritate a nerve root19. With the operation, specialists can remove these spurs.
