Yerself Is Steam is the 1991 debut album by Mercury Rev. The title is a malapropism of the phrase "Your self-esteem," and is taken from a recurring lyric in the opening "Chasing a Be. "Car Wash Hair" was released as a single to follow the album. Very Sleepy Rivers" is supposedly about a serial killer, with the river acting as a metaphor for the killer's relative calm and sudden tendency to snap.

After joining and leaving The Flaming Lips after just one album (the tremendous "In A Priest Driven Ambulance"), Nathan Donoghue formed one of the other best bands of the 1990s, Mercury Rev. Their debut, Yerself Is Steam isn't as consistent as the Lips' best albums, but the highlights are superb, including "Chasing The Bee" and "Car Wash Hair". Mercury Rev is an amazing band. They were part of the original dream pop wave of the late 80's but had a wicked knack for the noisier side of the style that other bands avoided. They continued recording one great album after the other for some years, apparently unnoticed by everyone except Flaming Lips fans. Their sound evolved, never lost its quality; only the uber distorted chaos was gone. On this conditions "Deserter's Songs" was released and Mercury Rev finally got the recognition they deserved. the music was total freedom
