Expression is an album by jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. Apart from the title track, the rest of the album was recorded at about the same time as Interstellar Space. Expression was released in September 1967, after Coltrane's unexpected death; this was the first posthumous release of a Coltrane recording. All tracks by John Coltrane.
It’s a means of expression, power, identity, he told Premier Guitar. Prince had the Cloud Guitar remade many times throughout his career in different colors and finishes, and the instrument re-emerged at several key points in his artistic evolution. Prince would call on the company Schecter to repair his Clouds and manufacture new replicas for his use, including a run that was sold to fans on Prince’s HitnRun Tour. Prince led the way, for artistic freedom, for ownership. He’s one of the bravest people I can think of in the industry," Jay-Z told the New York Times.
The group succeeds in lifting the piece up to its highest peak and then setting it back down in a way so organic it feels almost ordained by a mass mind. The 16-minute vamp of "To Be" is perhaps the most quizzical and interesting piece here, finding Trane on flute, an instrument that he never gave much air time to on previous sessions. The title track was Coltrane's last studio recording; the rest of the album was recorded at about the same time as Interstellar Space. To Be" features Coltrane on flute, the only recording he made on the instrument for an entire track. Expression was the last studio album to be approved for release by Coltrane before his death in July 1967, and was released in September 1967. Number One" – 11:55 Bonus track on 1993 CD reissue; previously issued on The Mastery of John Coltrane, Vol. 3: Jupiter Variation. Recorded on February 15 1967 ( March 7 1967 ( 3, 5), and unknown (.

Lovano's five-part Streams of Expression suite is most remarkable for the way it works with what could be confining complexity, but ultimately provides the eleven-piece ensemble surprising room for individual movement. Horn section shots-clearly scripted but feeling like organized chaos-lead the ensemble into a solo by Lovano on a new instrument called the Aulochrome, which looks like two soprano saxophones stuck together. The late Rahsaan Roland Kirk may have provided inspiration, but the Aulochrome affords a degree of polyphony that has never before possible, even when playing two horns simultaneously. Lovano puts it to creative use here and on the closing trio piece, the swinging "Big Ben.

This is the final Coltrane-approved release - he also gave the album its title - with the tracks recorded in 1967 at Van Gelder Studio on February 15 (To Be, Offering) and March 7 (Ogunde, the bonus track Number One), with Expression from an undated session. The music features Coltrane (tenor sax, flute), Pharoah Sanders (flute, piccolo, tambourine), Alice Coltrane (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Rashied Ali (drums). Coltrane is one of those few artists I have a degree of trust with, espeically after Giant Steps. Anything he does I will always listen, and never trash, no mater how I feel about it. I feel his work lost some fire when Coltrane lost Tyner and Jones.
