The Coming Out Of Their Shells Tour was a live musical tour that occurred in 1990 starting August 17. The very first showing of the tour was broadcast live on Pay-Per-View. The tour is generally lambasted for its terrible costumes and wafer-thin plot.

About Coming Out of Their Shells. The quality of said performance is up to debate, though it did spawn not only a home video release but also a soundtrack album featuring most of the songs from the show, which range from cheesy hard rock songs about pizza to bizarre easy listening ballads about skipping stones. Coming Out of Their Shells Q&A.

In 1990, a live-musical tour based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was produced. Called The Coming Out of Their Shells Tour, the show was part live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, part rock concert. Shamelessly consumerist, and a bizarre amalgam of all the things that made the early ‘90s the early ‘90s, Coming Out of Their Shells is such a strange part of pop culture I can’t decide whether it should be applauded or forgotten. Luckily, you don’t need to watch it to know how terrible it is, because I’ve done that for you. Released on Pay-Per-View and VHS, I went ahead and found a video of the concert online and watched the whole thing for your reading pleasure.

This was at a time when I was over-obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and gobbled up anything I could from them (except, ironically, the first Eastman & Laird comics, I got to those in m. .20's I guess, only the Archie comics were in my collection, but anyway). It has the sensibility to actually show the Turtles as, uh, 'TURTLES'! There was another 'Making of' Video for the first two movies (it's on Letterboxd you can look it up), but at least that showed the process of creating the Jim Henson animatronics for the suits and the actors were interviewed AS actors, plus the stunt coordinators, director, etc. It was actually useful information.

This is the soundtrack of my youth. Besides April's ballad the songs are fire.
