Description

Hapshash & The Coloured Coat.

Western Flier is a music studio album recording by HAPSHASH AND THE COLOURED COAT (ve Rock) released in 1969 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. The album was the follow-up to British artists Michael English and Nigel Waymouth’s first attempt at translating their poster and design art to music. By this second album Michael English had abandoned the band though, and Waymouth only played a nominal role.

Hapshash & the Coloured Coat's second and final album was a much more conventional and organized affair than the relatively anarchic, free-form (read songless) structure of their debut. Because of that, some listeners might be inclined to dismiss it as a sellout of sorts. Most listeners, however, will find it far easier to bear than its predecessor, even if it does sound more like a collection of tracks by a few different bands rather than a unified work. That doesn't mean, however, that it's a psychedelic album of note

In the annals of freakdom there are fewer more celebrated ‘musicians’ as Hapshash and the Coloured Coat – but not at the time of release as original copies of these vinyl albums have sold at auction for more than £70. These reissues are a fine indication of just how far ‘out there’ the psychedelic funsters of the mid-sixties could get and the albums take a few listens before the light-bulbs go on and the music begins to make real sense. The origins of the band lie in the talents of Michael English and his partner Nigel Waymouth. Actually, the first album has a mesmeric quality, with pounding and shamanic drumming and chants with the occasional electronic additions and screams.

In 1967 the pair released an album under the name Hapshash and the Coloured Coat and subtitled 'Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids'. The 'Heavy Metal Kids' were in fact the fledgling group ART, members of which would become the short-lived group SPOOKY TOOTH (Mike Harrison, Greg Ridley, Mike Kellie and Luther Grosvenor). English reportedly became disillusioned.

Hapshash and the Coloured Coat. Hapshash and the Coloured Coat was an influential British graphic design and avant-garde musical partnership in the late 1960s, consisting of Michael English and Nigel Waymouth. It produced popular psychedelic posters, and two albums of underground music.
